Varanus kordensis
The Biak Tree Monitor displays yellow green coloration with distinctive black netted patterning on the back, transforming into stunning turquoise hues when maintained in optimal captive conditions. Native to Biak Island, Indonesia, these arboreal specialists reach up to 2.5 feet total length. What makes Biak monitors particularly fascinating is their color development, animals raised with proper nutrition, consistent UVB exposure, and appropriate humidity often develop increasingly vibrant turquoise coloration that can rival or exceed their natural yellow green base. This color transformation over time, combined with their engaging personalities and manageable size, makes them highly sought after by keepers who appreciate watching their animals mature and develop enhanced visual appeal.
We produce captive bred Biak Tree Monitors right here in our USA facility. Every animal hatches in optimal conditions, feeds readily on varied diets of insects and quail, and arrives to you healthy, parasite free, and already acclimated to captive life without the stress and health challenges of wild caught imports. You get our health guarantee, detailed care protocols, and direct access to our breeding team.
Biak Tree Monitor Overview
Biak Tree Monitors follow established tree monitor care protocols with hatchlings starting in 3 feet wide by 2 feet tall by 2 feet deep enclosures and adults requiring 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall by 2 feet deep setups minimum. Their color transformation from yellow green to turquoise occurs gradually over their first year or two with proper husbandry, making it rewarding to watch them develop. They're active climbers spending extensive time on horizontal branches under UVB lighting. Feed every other day, alternating between gut loaded insects, quail, eggs, and various feeder insects.

About Biak Tree Monitors
Adult Biak Tree Monitors reach up to typically 29 inches, placing them on the smaller spectrum when it comes to tree monitor species. Approximately 60% of their total length is their prehensile tail, with snout to vent length measuring 12 inches at maturity. They reach full adult size around 24 months of age with consistent feeding and proper housing.
Biak Tree Monitors are a separate species that are restricted to Biak Island, while green tree monitors are found on mainland Papua New Guinea/West Papua and small surrounding islands. Their color is distinguished from Green Tree Monitors by their black netted pattern on the back and their tendency to develop turquoise coloration as they age. Green Tree Monitors display bold transverse bands and maintain their green coloring throughout their lives. Biaks are also slightly smaller than greens. Care requirements are essentially identical.
Temperament can vary significantly between individuals regardless of species. Consistent, gentle interaction from a young age, proper enclosure security that makes them feel safe, and meeting all their environmental needs contribute more to calm behavior than species alone. All tree monitors require respect and patience when working with them.
Biak Tree Monitors require intermediate care and can make a great pet if their basic requirements are met. Humidity control (75 to 85%), appropriate temperature gradients, substantial vertical enclosures (minimum 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall by 2 feet deep), high output UVB lighting, and daily maintenance including feeding every other day. We recommend some level of prior experience with reptiles before acquiring any tree monitor.
Biak Tree Monitors are carnivorous, feeding every other day on a varied rotating diet. We alternate between gut loaded crickets and dubia roaches, day old quail, scrambled eggs, superworms, hornworms, and silkworms. Varying food sources ensures balanced nutrition and contributes to better overall health and more vibrant coloration development. All insects should be gut loaded with fresh organic vegetables 24 hours before feeding and dusted with calcium powder at each feeding, rotating between pure calcium and calcium with D3.
