Leachianus geckos require larger enclosures than other New Caledonian species due to their substantial size, with adults needing minimum 18x18x36 inch vertical setups, though larger is always better for these active animals. Despite their impressive bulk, they maintain the same easy care requirements as smaller relatives, thriving on prepared gecko diets and room temperature conditions. Leachianus tend to be more territorial and vocal than Chahoua or Gargoyle geckos, producing distinctive barking sounds when defending territory or feeling threatened. Their personalities range from relatively calm to assertive depending on locale and individual temperament, making them engaging animals for keepers who appreciate geckos with substantial presence and character.

About Leachianus Geckos
Adult Leachianus geckos are the world's largest gecko species, reaching 14 to 17 inches total length depending on locality. Mainland Grand Terre animals are the largest, often exceeding 15 inches and weighing over 400 grams. Island localities like Nuu Ana, Nuu Ami, and Pine Island produce smaller animals in the 10 to 13 inch range. They reach adult size around 18 to 24 months with proper feeding and care.
Leachianus geckos can work for dedicated beginners, though their size makes them more intimidating than smaller New Caledonian species. They have the same straightforward care requirements as Crested and Gargoyle geckos, thriving at room temperature and eating prepared diets. However, their larger size means they need bigger enclosures and can deliver more forceful bites if defensive. If you're comfortable with their size and have space for appropriate housing, they're as manageable as other New Caledonian geckos.
Different island and mainland populations show significant size and appearance variations. Grand Terre mainland animals are the largest, reaching 15 to 17 inches with robust builds. Nuu Ana animals are smaller and often display white or pink base colors. Pine Island Leachianus show distinct pattern characteristics with banded appearances. Nuu Ami animals fall somewhere in between. All localities have the same care requirements, the choice comes down to size preference and aesthetic appeal.
Leachianus geckos thrive on prepared gecko diets like Pangea and Repashy, the same foods used for Crested and Gargoyle geckos. We feed adults different flavor varieties rotated throughout the week rather than offering insects, though some keepers choose to supplement with occasional insects for enrichment. Their larger size means they consume more food per feeding compared to smaller New Caledonian species, but the diet composition remains the same.
UVB lighting is optional for Leachianus geckos but can be beneficial, particularly for breeding females. We use low output UVB (5.0 bulbs) on some of our breeding groups. Many keepers successfully maintain and breed Leachianus long term without UVB by providing proper calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation with their prepared diets. The choice is yours based on your setup preferences.
Leachianus geckos have exceptional longevity, typically living 20 to 30 years in captivity with proper care. Some well-maintained individuals have exceeded 30 years, making them true lifetime companions. Their long lifespan makes starting with healthy captive bred animals crucial, you're potentially committing to decades of care.
Adult Leachianus geckos need substantial enclosures due to their large size. Minimum enclosure dimensions are 18 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 24 inches tall for smaller island localities, while larger mainland animals benefit from 24x24x36 inch enclosures or larger. Vertical space is important as they're arboreal climbers despite their bulk. Larger is always better for these impressive animals.
