Saltuarius Salebrosus

This impressive Australian leaf-tail is an absolute show stopper.  Native to central Queensland, Australia, these large geckos have a cryptic appearance that allows them to blend into their surroundings, where they hunt and sleep on large rock outcrops and trees.  Unlike Madagascan leaf tails, this species is extremely hardy and easy to care for, making them an excellent choice for all levels of reptile keepers.  Given their ability to reach 10 inches in length, and their cryptic appearance, this species impresses anyone who lays eyes on them.

We keep our adults in 18"x18"x24" enclosures.  They are completely insectivorous and breeding adults benefit from a winter cooling.

This species can thrive at room temperature, making them excellent choices for keepers. They're nocturnal ambush hunters that rely on camouflage rather than speed, spending most of their time motionless on vertical surfaces waiting for prey to come within striking distance. Adults do well in 18x18x24 inch vertical enclosures with plenty of cork bark and branches positioned vertically to mimic their natural tree dwelling behavior.

About Australian Leaf-Tailed Geckos

Two distinct genera here. Saltuarius salebrosus is significantly larger, reaching 12 inches with a massive, robust build. They have incredible cryptic coloration that blends perfectly with tree bark. Phyllurus amnicola is smaller at 6 to 8 inches and features the remarkable ability to change color dramatically from night to day, going from slaty gray to whitish pink. Both are leaf-tailed geckos from Australia, but again, they're different genera with distinct appearances ranges and behaviors.

Saltuarius salebrosus reaches 10 to 12 inches total length, making them one of the largest leaf-tailed gecko species in the world.

Saltuarius salebrosus does not change color much. Rather, they maintain their cryptic bark like appearance during day and night.

Yes! These geckos do well in normal room temperatures. A simple enclosure with vertically oriented cork flats and a dirt substrate will do the trick. They do like a daily misting, which helps maintain their proper humidity levels. We recommend them for keepers who can appreciate animals that are best observed rather than handled frequently.

Both Saltuarius salebrosus and Phyllurus amnicola prefer intermediate temperatures from 65 to 80°F. Gravid females of both species can benefit from a basking spot. . During winter months, both can also benefit from a cooling period that can slow down their metabolism, allowing a break from the breeding season.

This species is strictly insectivorous, feeding on appropriately sized crickets, small dubia roaches, and other feeder insects. They're ambush predators that wait for prey to come close rather than actively hunting. We feed juveniles every other day and adults two to three times weekly. All insects should be gut loaded 24 hours before feeding and dusted with calcium powder to ensure proper nutrition.
