Housing Your Chahoua Gecko

Hatchling Setup

Young chahoua geckos from hatching through six months thrive in 6 quart tupperware containers. These containers hold humidity effectively, stack for efficient space management, and clean easily. Drill six to eight small ventilation holes into the sides of each container to provide adequate airflow without excessive humidity loss.

 Adult Enclosure Requirements

Adults do well in Zoomed 18 inch wide by 18 inch long by 24 inch tall glass terrariums or Animal Plastics rack setups with 90 quart tupperware bins. Both enclosure styles accommodate single adults or pairs successfully. The choice between glass display enclosures and rack systems depends on whether you prioritize visibility or space efficiency.

Furnishing and Decoration

Climbing Structures

Cut branches from non-toxic hardwoods such as oak, maple, and hickory to create climbing opportunities throughout your enclosure. Position branches at various heights and angles to maximize usable space. Bendable artificial vines provide another climbing option that you can shape to fill gaps between rigid branches.

Cork tubes offer excellent hiding spots and sleeping areas. Chahoua geckos will wedge themselves into these tubes during daylight hours, emerging at night to hunt and explore. Select tube diameters that allow your gecko to fit comfortably without excessive room.

Additional Hides and Cover

Artificial or live plants provide visual barriers and security cover throughout the enclosure. Chahoua geckos appreciate multiple hiding options at different heights. For hatchlings and juveniles, cardboard egg cartons serve as cheap, disposable hides that you can replace when they become soiled.

Substrate Selection

Paper towels work well for hatchlings in tupperware setups. While not aesthetically appealing, they simplify cleaning and allow you to monitor fecal output easily. Replace soiled sections daily and complete substrate changes take only moments.

Soil-based substrate mixes create more naturalistic displays for adult enclosures. These substrates can be spot cleaned as needed, with full changes occurring every few months. Isopods can be added as part of a bioactive setup if you're not breeding in that enclosure. Exercise caution with isopods in breeding enclosures, as they will damage or consume eggs.

Temperature and Lighting

Daytime ambient temperatures should range between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Chahoua geckos tolerate room temperature conditions better than most reptile species. Create a focused basking spot reaching 82 degrees using a 25 watt halogen bulb dimmed down with a household dimmer switch. Regardless of your bulb wattage, this allows precise temperature control.

Nighttime temperatures can drop into the low 70s during warmer months and into the mid 60s during winter months. These seasonal temperature fluctuations help trigger breeding behavior in adults. We use LED lighting to provide a 12 hour on, 12 hour off photoperiod for our geckos.

UVB lighting remains optional for chahoua geckos. While a low percentage UV bulb such as Zoomed 5.0 can be provided, it is not necessary for your gecko to thrive and reproduce. Many successful breeding programs operate without any UVB supplementation.

For rack style setups, heat tape controlled by a thermostat provides consistent warmth. Set tape temperatures to 80 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit on approximately one third of the enclosure bottom, creating a thermal gradient that allows your gecko to thermoregulate effectively.

Hydration and Humidity

Fresh water should be available at all times in a small shallow dish. Chahoua geckos will drink from standing water regularly. We recommend daily water changes to maintain freshness and prevent bacterial growth.

Humidity should fluctuate between 55 and 85 percent. A heavy misting once nightly provides drinking opportunities and boosts humidity levels. This nightly routine mimics the natural humidity cycles these geckos experience in their native habitat. Most homes maintain adequate baseline humidity for chahoua geckos without constant intervention.

Feeding Protocol

Diet Composition

We feed our chahoua geckos a combination of live crickets and complete meal replacement formulas such as Zoomed Gecko Diet, Pangea Gecko Diet, or Repashy Superfoods. We rotate between crickets and prepared gecko diet with every feeding rather than offering both simultaneously. This rotation ensures dietary variety while simplifying feeding routines.

Supplementation

Gut loading your feeder insects with fresh organic vegetables is vital for passing nutrition to your geckos. We rotate each insect feeding between straight calcium supplement and calcium with D3. This alternating schedule ensures adequate calcium intake while preventing vitamin D3 over-supplementation.

Feeding Schedule

Adults receive food every third day, whether that's prepared diet or live insects. Juveniles eat more frequently during their rapid growth phase. Adjust feeding frequency based on your gecko's body condition.

Growth and Development

Maturity Timeline

With consistent feeding and optimal husbandry conditions, chahoua geckos reach adult size within 24 months. Females reach sexual maturity at 2 1/2 to 3 years of age while males can be sexually mature within 18 months.

Expected Lifespan

Captive bred chahoua geckos maintained under proper husbandry conditions typically live beyond 20 years.

Locality Differences

Pine Island locality Chahoua tend toward larger, more robust body types with different pattern characteristics compared to Mainland animals. There is more color and pattern variation with Pine Island chahoua over mainlands. Both have the same care requirements and temperaments, so the choice comes down to aesthetic preference. We work only with Pine Island localities and can help you select your gecko based on the look you're after.

Behavioral Characteristics

Chahoua geckos are notably calm and handleable compared to other New Caledonian species. They rarely drop their tails, which makes them more forgiving for keepers still developing their handling technique. Given that this is a nocturnal species, their behaviors can be observed when they regularly emerge during the evening hours to explore their environment.

These geckos vocalize occasionally, producing soft chirping sounds during breeding season or when startled. This vocalization adds an interactive element that many keepers find engaging.

Social Housing Considerations

Adult chahoua geckos can be housed in pairs for breeding purposes. Ensure adequate space and abundant hiding spots to minimize competition and stress. Monitor animals closely for any signs of aggression or feeding suppression. Remove any animal being dominated by cage mates immediately.

Health Monitoring

Watch for signs indicating potential health problems: sustained lethargy, visible weight loss, labored breathing, retained shed particularly on digits, eye caps, and tail tip, or abnormal fecal presentation. Any of these symptoms warrant immediate consultation with a reptile experienced veterinarian.

Identify and establish contact with a qualified reptile veterinarian before health emergencies arise. Regular fecal examinations help detect parasite issues before they develop into serious problems.

Pre-Acquisition Considerations

Chahoua geckos represent excellent choices for keepers new to New Caledonian species. Their room temperature requirements eliminate complex heating setups. Their willingness to eat prepared diets means you can maintain these geckos successfully even if you're uncomfortable handling large quantities of live insects. Their gentle disposition makes them appropriate for keepers of various experience levels.

For keepers prepared to meet basic requirements, chahoua geckos offer rewards that few other gecko species can match. Observing their color development provides genuine satisfaction that more challenging species cannot replicate as readily for beginning keepers.

Successful chahoua gecko keeping begins with proper preparation. Set up your enclosure completely before acquiring an animal. Source quality prepared gecko diets from reputable manufacturers. These preparatory steps establish a foundation for long term success rather than reactive problem solving after difficulties arise.
