Housing Your Chinese Cave Gecko

Hatchling Setup

Hatchlings to year old Chinese cave geckos do well in 6 to 12 quart tupperware containers. These containers hold humidity effectively, stack for efficient space management, and clean easily. Drill six to eight small ventilation holes into the sides of each container to provide adequate airflow without excessive humidity loss.

Adult Enclosure Requirements

Adults do well in 16 quart sterilite containers or 10 to 20 gallon glass aquariums. These terrestrial geckos require floor space rather than height. Single adults or pairs can be housed together in appropriately sized terrariums. The choice between glass display enclosures and rack systems depends on whether you prioritize visibility or space efficiency.

Furnishing and Decoration

Ground-Level Hides

Cork bark rounds, half logs, and stone caves create essential hiding opportunities. Chinese cave geckos are fossorial by nature and spend daylight hours completely hidden. Provide at least two hides per gecko - one on the warm end and one on the cool end of the enclosure.

Slate or flat stones can be stacked to create cave-like structures that mimic their natural limestone cave habitat. Ensure all structures are stable and cannot collapse on the gecko.

Additional Cover

Artificial or live plants can be added but are not necessary. Low-growing plants or moss patches provide additional visual security without obstructing floor space.

Substrate Selection

Soil-based substrate mixes work best for both hatchlings and adults. These substrates can be spot cleaned as needed, with full changes occurring every few months. Do not use isopods if you are breeding, as they may damage or consume eggs.

Temperature and Lighting

Daytime ambient temperatures should range between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. These nocturnal geckos don't require a basking spot but benefit from a slight thermal gradient across the enclosure.

Nighttime temperatures can drop into the mid to high 60s without issue. These cooler nights replicate the temperature fluctuations in their native Chinese cave systems.

Use LED lighting to provide a 12 hour on, 12 hour off photoperiod. Keep lighting minimal as these geckos are nocturnal and light-sensitive.

UVB lighting is not necessary for Chinese cave geckos. These crepuscular and nocturnal geckos thrive without any UVB supplementation when provided proper calcium and vitamin supplementation.

Hydration and Humidity

Fresh water should be available at all times in a small shallow dish. Chinese cave geckos will drink from standing water. Daily water changes maintain freshness and prevent bacterial growth.

Humidity should range between 60 and 75 percent. Moderate misting every evening provides drinking opportunities and maintains appropriate humidity levels. Allow the enclosure to dry partially between mistings. Cave geckos require humidity but not constant saturation.

Feeding Protocol

Diet Composition

Chinese cave geckos are obligate insectivores requiring live prey. We feed appropriately sized crickets, dubia roaches, and occasional mealworms. Prey size should be no larger than the width of the gecko's head. These geckos are ambush predators that emerge at night to hunt.

Supplementation

Gut loading your feeder insects with fresh organic vegetables is vital for passing nutrition to your geckos. Dust insects with calcium supplement at every feeding. Provide calcium with D3 once weekly, as these geckos receive no natural UV exposure.

Feeding Schedule

Adults receive food every two to three days. Juveniles eat more frequently during their rapid growth phase, typically every other day. Adjust feeding frequency based on your gecko's body condition and feeding response.

Growth and Development

Maturity Timeline

With consistent feeding and optimal husbandry conditions, Chinese cave geckos reach adult size within 24 months minimum. Adults typically measure 6 to 7 inches total length. Females reach sexual maturity at 24 months while males mature slightly earlier at 18 to 24 months.

Expected Lifespan

Captive bred Chinese cave geckos maintained under proper husbandry conditions typically live 10 to 15 years.

Behavioral Characteristics

Chinese cave geckos are strictly nocturnal and secretive by nature. During daylight hours, they remain completely hidden in their retreats. They emerge after dark to hunt and explore their territory.

These geckos are generally calm when handled but should be handled minimally. They can be fast when startled. Frequent handling causes unnecessary stress. Observe these geckos during evening hours rather than disturb them during the day.

Chinese cave geckos may produce soft vocalizations when startled or during breeding interactions. Males can be territorial during breeding season.

Social Housing Considerations

Adult Chinese cave geckos can be housed in pairs for breeding purposes. Ensure adequate floor space and multiple hides to minimize competition and stress. Monitor animals closely for any signs of aggression. Remove any animal being dominated by cage mates immediately.

Multiple males should not be housed together as they will fight. Male and female pairs or single animals work best for long-term housing.

Health Monitoring

Watch for signs indicating potential health problems: sustained lethargy, visible weight loss, labored breathing, retained shed particularly on digits and tail tip, or abnormal fecal presentation. Any of these symptoms warrant immediate consultation with a reptile experienced veterinarian.

Identify and establish contact with a qualified reptile veterinarian before health emergencies arise. Regular fecal examinations help detect parasite issues before they develop into serious problems.

Chinese cave geckos can be susceptible to metabolic bone disease if calcium supplementation is inadequate. Watch for weak limbs or difficulty walking as early indicators.

Pre-Acquisition Considerations

Chinese cave geckos represent excellent choices for keepers experienced with insectivorous species who appreciate nocturnal, secretive animals. Their moderate temperature requirements eliminate complex heating setups. Their small size and horizontal space needs make them practical for keepers with limited vertical space.

These geckos are not appropriate for keepers seeking interactive or visually active pets. They're secretive animals best appreciated through patient evening observation rather than frequent handling.

For keepers prepared to meet basic requirements and appreciate rare, elegant beauty, Chinese cave geckos offer rewards that few other gecko species can match. Observing their unique patterns and behaviors provides genuine satisfaction for keepers who value uncommon species.

Successful Chinese cave gecko keeping begins with proper preparation. Set up your enclosure completely before acquiring an animal. Source quality feeder insects from reputable suppliers. Ensure appropriate hides are positioned on both warm and cool ends. These preparatory steps establish a foundation for long term success rather than reactive problem solving after difficulties arise.
