Sundown Reptiles

Here we will highlight the basic care requirements of the Golden-spotted tree monitor (Varanus boehmei).

Cage Size:

We recommend the minimum of 4'x4'x2' PVC enclosure for adults. Cork tiles walls will give your monitor the ability to climb more surface area of your cage.  Given that this size is the minimum, we encourage giving your monitor the largest cage possible for your space.  The main issue is making sure that your heat is able to be sufficient throughout the enclosure.

Lighting:
We use Zoomed 5.0 reptisun T5 fluorescent bulbs for our tree monitors.  Placing horizontal branches 8-12" underneath these bulbs will provide a sufficient and frequently used basking perch for your monitor.

For heating, we build out our heat fixtures with porcelain light bulb sockets and steel electrical boxes from Lowes or Home Depot.  8' electrical cords can be purchased on amazon to fire your light bulb socket.

39 watt halogen bulbs on dimmer switches are used to reach the desired basking temperature of 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Furnishings
These incredible animals are arboreal, so be sure to give them plenty of branches to climb on!  Non-toxic hardwoods such as oak, maple, and hickory work well.  One of the most important placement sites is a horizontal branch going from one side of the cage to the other under your UV.  This is where your monitor will spend the majority of it's time.
Cork tubes are another great addition to your cage.  However, make sure your cork tube is only slightly larger in diameter than the body of your monitor.  They like to squeeze into their tubes with a snug fit.
Screwing cork flats onto your cork tiled wall will provide another tight area for your animals to sleep in and feel secure.

Substrate:
Soil mixes and/or cypress mulch are our preferred substrates for tree monitors.  These are able to be spot cleaned easily, which is something that you will do often, given your animal's high metabolism.

Hydration and Humidity:
Fresh water will be utilized by your tree monitor.  We recommend a shallow dish of fresh water to be available at all times.
Humidity in the native habitat of tree monitors ranges from 80-100%.  In order to meet this higher humidity requirement, we utilize a misting system that runs from 1-2 times per day for a minute each cycle.  Hand misting is also an option.

Feeding
We feed our monitors a varied diet of crickets, roaches, day old quail, scrambled eggs, and occasional rodents.  Gut loading your insects with fresh organic veggies is vital.

These are the basic requirements for making your tree monitor happy.   If you start with captive bred tree monitors and follow the above care requirements, you will be set up for a long enjoyable journey with some of the most amazing reptiles on the planet!
