Housing Your Leachianus Gecko

Hatchling Setup

Young leachianus geckos from hatching through six months do well in 6 quart tupperware containers. These containers hold humidity effectively, stack for efficient space management, and clean easily.  These tubs fit well in rack systems and allow for a large number of babies to be housed. Drill six to eight small ventilation holes into the sides of each container to provide adequate airflow without excessive humidity loss.

Adult Enclosure Requirements

Adults require significantly larger enclosures than other New Caledonian species. Minimum enclosure size for adults is 18 inches wide by 18 inches long by 24 inches tall for smaller locales, while larger locales can benefit from enclosures measuring 24" wide x 24" long x 36" tall. The choice between glass display enclosures and custom built enclosures depends on whether you prioritize visibility or space efficiency. Leachianus geckos actively utilize vertical space and need substantial climbing room.

Furnishing and Decoration

Climbing Structures

Cut branches from non-toxic hardwoods such as oak, maple, and hickory to create climbing opportunities throughout your enclosure. Position branches at various heights and angles to maximize usable space. Bendable artificial vines provide another climbing option that you can shape to fill gaps between rigid branches.

Cork tubes and cork flats offer excellent hiding spots and sleeping areas. Leachianus geckos will wedge themselves into these areas during daylight hours, emerging at night to hunt and explore. Select tube diameters that allow your gecko to fit comfortably without excessive room.

Additional Hides and Cover

Artificial or live plants provide visual barriers and security cover throughout the enclosure.  Keep in mind that larger specimens can trample and destroy plants in their enclosure. Leachianus geckos appreciate multiple hiding options at different heights. For hatchlings and juveniles, cardboard egg cartons serve as cheap, disposable hides that you can replace when they become soiled.

Substrate Selection

Paper towels work well for hatchlings in tupperware setups. While not aesthetically appealing, they simplify cleaning and allow you to monitor fecal output easily. Replace soiled sections daily and complete substrate changes take only moments.

Soil-based substrate mixes create more naturalistic displays for adult enclosures. These substrates can be spot cleaned as needed, with full changes occurring every few months. Isopods can be added as part of a bioactive setup if you are not breeding in that enclosure. Exercise caution with isopods in breeding enclosures, as they will damage or consume eggs.

Temperature and Lighting

Daytime ambient temperatures should range between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Leachianus geckos tolerate room temperature conditions better than most reptile species. Create a focused basking spot reaching 82 degrees using a 25 watt halogen bulb dimmed down with a household dimmer switch. Regardless of your bulb wattage, this allows precise temperature control.

Nighttime temperatures can drop into the low 70s during warmer months and into the mid 60s during winter months. These seasonal temperature fluctuations help trigger or shut down breeding activity. We use LED lighting to provide a 12 hour on, 12 hour off photoperiod for our geckos.

UVB lighting remains optional for leachianus geckos. While a low percentage UV bulb such as Zoo Med 5.0 can be provided, it is not necessary for your gecko to thrive and reproduce. Many successful breeding programs operate without any UVB supplementation.

For rack style setups with juveniles, heat tape controlled by a thermostat provides consistent warmth. Set tape temperatures to 80 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit on approximately one third of the enclosure bottom, creating a thermal gradient that allows your gecko to thermoregulate effectively.

Hydration and Humidity

Fresh water should be available at all times in a small shallow dish. Leachianus geckos will drink from standing water regularly. We recommend water changes every other day to maintain freshness and prevent bacterial growth.

Humidity should fluctuate between 55 and 85 percent. A heavy misting once nightly provides drinking opportunities and boosts humidity levels. This nightly routine mimics the natural humidity cycles these geckos experience in their native habitat. Most homes maintain adequate baseline humidity for leachianus geckos without constant intervention.

Feeding Protocol

Diet Composition

We feed our leachianus geckos mostly a diet of complete meal replacement formulas such as Zoo Med Gecko Diet, Pangea Gecko Diet, or Repashy Superfoods. Fresh fruits can also be added to your formulas to enhance feeding response and nutrition.  This species can also take live foods such as insects and small mice or quail.  However, every individual has its own preferences and may not take to live prey.  A dietary rotation ensures variety for your geckos.

Supplementation

Adding additional calcium to your dietary supplements can be helpful for your female geckos that are producing eggs.  Gut loading your feeder insects with fresh organic vegetables is important for passing nutrition to your geckos. We rotate each insect feeding between straight calcium supplement and calcium with D3. This alternating schedule ensures adequate calcium intake while preventing vitamin D3 over -supplementation.

Feeding Schedule

Adults receive food every other day to every third day, whether that is prepared diet or live insects. Juveniles eat more frequently during their rapid growth phase. Adjust feeding frequency based on your gecko's body condition and activity level.

Growth and Development

Maturity Timeline

With consistent feeding and optimal husbandry conditions, leachianus geckos reach adult size within 30 to 48 months. Sexual maturity typically occurs around the same timeframe, though individual variation exists based on growth rates and overall health. This species tents to grow slower than other New Caledonian geckos.

Expected Lifespan

Captive bred leachianus geckos maintained under proper husbandry conditions can live 20-30 years. With exceptional care and stable environmental conditions, some individuals exceed this baseline considerably.

Color Development

Leachianus geckos display remarkable variation between locales. Colors range from greens, browns, grays and whites, to pinks, purples and reds.  The species can also have various pattern types including barring and spotting. The Locality or cross of your animal affects both color and size, with some locales producing larger, more robust animals while others produce smaller, more colorful individuals. Many individuals can fire up or fire down, meaning their colors intensify or fade based on temperature, stress level, and time of day.

Behavioral Characteristics

Leachianus geckos are the largest living gecko species and display bold personalities. Adult temperament varies considerably between individuals. Some become quite handleable and calm, while others remain more defensive.  Usually, all personality types calm down once they are removed from their cage. They rarely drop their tails under normal handling conditions. Given that this is a nocturnal species, their behaviors can be observed when they regularly emerge during evening hours to explore their environment and hunt for food.

One of the most incredible traits that these geckos exhibit is their incredible ability to vocalize.  These geckos vocalize frequently, producing distinctive growling, barking, or hissing sounds when startled or during territorial displays. This vocalization adds an interactive element but can be surprisingly loud for their size.

Social Housing Considerations

Adult leachianus geckos can be housed in pairs for breeding purposes. Ensure adequate space and abundant hiding spots to minimize competition and stress. Monitor your animals closely for any signs of aggression or feeding suppression. Remove any animal being dominated by cage mates immediately. Males should never be housed together as territorial aggression will result.

Health Monitoring

Watch for signs indicating potential health problems: sustained lethargy, visible weight loss, labored breathing, retained shed particularly on digits, eye caps, and tail tip, or abnormal feces. Any of these symptoms may warrant a consultation with a reptile experienced veterinarian.

Identify and establish contact with a qualified reptile veterinarian before health emergencies arise. Regular fecal examinations help detect parasite issues before they develop into serious problems.

Pre-Acquisition Considerations

Leachianus geckos represent excellent choices for all levels of keepers.  Their room temperature requirements eliminate complex heating setups. Their willingness to eat prepared diets means you can maintain these geckos successfully even if you are uncomfortable handling large quantities of live insects. Their size and bold personalities make them impressive display animals.

The incredible locale variation available in leachianus geckos allows you to select animals matching your aesthetic preferences and size requirements. Whether you prefer the large robust mainland forms or the smaller more colorful island locales, the variety ensures you can find a gecko that appeals to you visually.

Successful leachianus gecko keeping begins with proper preparation. Set up your enclosure completely before acquiring an animal. Source quality prepared gecko diets from reputable manufacturers such as Zoo Med, Pangea, or Repashy. Connect with experienced breeders who can help you select an animal with the locale, coloration, and temperament you prefer.
